Death from OD was murder:
While St. Tammany Parish prosecutors argued Tuesday that Walter A. Kott Jr. murdered a 22-year-old woman. He injected her with a lethal dose of a commonly abused painkiller. Kott's defense attorney tried to suggest to jurors that the woman died because of drugs she took herself. Kott is charged with 2nd-degree- murder in the death of Rebecca R. Roshto, who was found dead of a overdose on January 29, 2004, in a bath tub at a Slidell motel. DA, Jason Cuccia told jurors that Roshto died after Kott shot Dilaudid into a vein in her arm so that she could get high. She overdosed, and more than three hours passed before Kott called 911.
Wife receives 10 years in slaying:
St. Tammany Parish judge sentenced Kendra Talley to 10 years in prison for participating in the shooting death of her husband two weeks before Christmas 2004. Tally pleaded guilty last month to manslaughter and possession of crystal meth. She had been facing a 2nd-degree murder charge in the Dec. 11, 2004, slaying of Thomas Talley, outside their Covington Pointe subdivision home. She also has to serve 5yrs. for the drug charge.Kendra Talley's lover, Tommy D. Rowell Sr., was convicted of 2nd-degree murder in 2007 for firing the gun that killed Talley. He is serving a mandatory life sentence in prison.
Man jailed on incest charges:
A 51-yr.-old Destrehan man was arrested last week and remains in jail booked with aggravated incest. According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, the man, is accused of repeatedly sexually abusing a family member from the age of 8 to 15. He was arrested last month on similar charges and was still in jail when the most recent allegations were lodged on Nov. 24. He remains in the parish jail with bond set at $130,000.
Wellhead accident injures 3 workers:
3 workers were injured Wednesday when a wellhead exploded in Bayou Perot in lower Jefferson Parish.Parish officials said the workers reported they were welding on the rig when it exploded. The fire was quickly extinguished.The well operator, Louisiana Delta Oil Co., reported the fire to the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Office in Houma about 10 a.m., according to the Coast Guard, which is investigating the incident. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office also received a 911 call about that time, parish officials said.
Harvey man gets four years on federal gun charge:
A Harvey man has been sentenced to four years in federal prison after pleading guilty this year to gun possession during a rolling gun battle on Destrehan Avenue in Harvey. Jonathan Manuel,was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey in federal court Wednesday, and in addition to his 48-month sentence received three years' probation upon release, according to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office. Manuel pleaded guilty in September to engaging in a gun battle with another car while driving in the 3000 block of Destrehan Avenue in January 2008, according to court records. Police were alerted by residents that people in two vehicles were exchanging gunfire. Officers saw the passenger in one vehicle flee on foot carrying a purse and, although he escaped, police eventually located the purse and a handgun, the press release said. Manuel was later identified as the passenger fleeing with the purse.
