 Monet

               Claude Monet was born on 14 November 1840 on the 5th floor of 45 rue Lafitte, in the 9th arrondissment of Paris. On 20 May 1841, he was baptized in the local parish church, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, as Oscar-Claude, but his parents called him Oscar. In 1845, his family moved to Le Havre in Normandy. He dad wanted to be in the family grocery business, but he wanted to be an artist. While his mother was a singer.

              April 1, 1851, Monet attended Le Havre secondary school of the arts. January 28, 1857, his mother died. At 16 years old, he left school and went to live with his widowed childless aunts.When Monet traveled to Paris to visit the Louvre, he witnessed painters copying from the old masters. He brought his paints and other tools with him and sat by the window and painted what he saw. He was in Paris for several years, so he meet other young painter, who would become his friends.

             Monet died of lung cancer on December 2, 1926 at the age of 86. He was buried in the Giverny church cemetery. Monet wanted the occasion to be simple; only about 50 people to attend the ceremony.His home, garden and waterlily pond were bequeathed by his son Michel, his only heir, to the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1966. 2004, a painting of his was sold for $20.1 million. An 1873 painting auction in New York on May 6, 2008 sold for $41.4 million.
